The Calculus of Plane and Solid Figures

Calculus Concepts and Applications - Chapter 8

Chapter 8 Sections

8-1 Cubic Functions and Their Derivatives
Objective: Work alone or with your study group to explore the graphs of various cubic functions, and make connections between the functions' graphs and their derivatives.
Homework: Problems 1-5 all

8-2 Critical Points and Points of Inflection
Objective: From information about the first and second derivatives of a function, tell whether the y-value is a local maximum or minimum at a critical point, tell whether the graph has a point of inflection, and use this information to draw the graph or finding the equation of the function.
Homework - Day 1: Q Problems 1-10, Problems 1-15 odd
Homework - Day 2: Problems 17-35 odd
Homework - Day 3: Problems 37-40 all
Homework - Day 4: Problems 41-47 all

8-3 Maxima and Minima in Plane and Solid Figures
Objective: Given a plane or solid figure, find the maximum or minimum perimeter, area, or volume.
Homework - Day 1: Q Problems 1-10, Problems 1-5 odd
Homework - Day 2: Problems 7, 11, 15, 17
Homework - Day 3: Problems 19, 23, 25
